Description
If you are trying to construct a transmitter or amplifier you will probably need a mains power supply. There are several key parameters you will need to meet for your project, they are described below:
1.) Voltage
need a mains power supply. Most RF amplifiers need power supply rated at a voltage of 12-15V, 48V or lately also 62-65V. Check your transmitter, pallet or amplifier specifications and make sure you are using mains power supply of correct voltage rating.
2.) Current/power rating
Stronger amplifiers need more power and current. You can calculate power rating by multiplying current and voltage: P = U * I. For example a power supply rated at 48V that can supply 10A of current has a power rating of: 48V * 10A* 480W. However be carefull, a 300W FM band amplifier will typically need mains power supply rated at 450-600W. Why? Amplifiers are not 100% efficient, a part of power is lost as heat. Also any additional circuitry such as fans, control unit with display or exciters will also take some power out of the power supply. Our advice: Look at the amplifier specifications, they specify voltage and current. Add 10%-20% more current for safety, for example for an amplifier specified at 10A use power supply rated at 11-12A. Also add current requirements of any additional items, such as fans etc. Than multiply this by voltage and you will get required power rating of your power supply. Important: TV pallets have much higher losses since they operate in linear region so a 100W TV pallet may need 500W power supply, keep this in mind.
3.) Mains voltage
Some mains power supplies are universal and work worldwide, others only work at 110V or 220V. Make sure you get the correct mains power supply for your region.
4.) Other things to check
– Some mains power supplies are universal and work at 110-240V, but provide less power at 110V, check the specs well.
– Remote control usually serves to turn the unit on and off with a small switch connected to two pins on the power supply, this simplifies design as mains voltage does not need to be switched. Remote control in some models also makes it possible
to set output voltage with control signal, this can be used to connect our amplifier control board..
– Some mains power supplies are universal and work at 110-240V, but provide less power at 110V, check the specs well.
– Some supplies have active phase correction (PFC), others not. In EU PFC is obligatory, but in the US and many other places it is not. Supplies with PFC are typically more expensive.
