Description
Ampleon’s BLF184XR is a popular member of its renowned family rugged “XR” LDMOS power transistors designed specifically for use in high power amplifiers operating in the HF – 600 MHz. Suiting use in a wide variety of broadcast and industrial applications, and capable of operating with a VSWR up to 65:1, the device is rated to deliver 700 Watt CW or 750 Watt pulsed. Device is not recommended for new designs, Ampleon recommends you to use more modern ART700 instead.
Ampleon’s BLF188XR is the most popular member of its renowned family rugged “XR” LDMOS power transistors designed specifically for use in high power amplifiers operating in the 10 – 600 MHz. Suiting use in a wide variety of broadcast and industrial applications, and capable of operating with a VSWR up to 65:1, the device is rated to deliver 1,200 Watt CW or 1,400 Watt pulsed. Device is not recommended for new designs, Ampleon recommends you to use more modern ART1K6 instead.
Ampleon’s BLF189XR is the latest member of its renowned family rugged “XR” LDMOS power transistors designed specifically for use in high power amplifiers operating in the 10 – 500 MHz. Suiting use in a wide variety of broadcast and industrial applications, and capable of operating with a VSWR up to 65:1, the device is rated to deliver 1,700 Watt CW or 1,900 Watt pulsed.
The BLF189XR is available in two variants. The BLF189XRB delivers 40 % more output power than the BLF188XR (1900 Watt pulsed) and is aimed at applications working at frequencies up to 150 MHz. The second product will be the BLF189XRA, which can deliver 20 % more output power compared to the current BLF188XR (1700W pulsed), and is optimized to operate across the entire band up to 500 MHz.
Delivering the highest possible power and reducing the number of transistors required to build a high power output amplifier, the rugged BLF189XR provides the high possible efficiency from the smallest possible package and offers the extremely low cost per watt using Ampleon’s rugged Gen6HV LDMOS 50 V process technology.
In addition to FM broadcast applications, the potential use cases for industrial, scientific and medical equipment include plasma generators, medical scanners and particle accelerators. Industrial RF heating, drying and thawing are other possible uses.
The BLF189XR is constructed in an SOT539A package. An optional earless flanged SOT539B package device, the BLF189XRS, is also available. Device is not recommended for new designs, Ampleon recommends you to use more modern ART2K0 instead.

Some general tips for using modern RF transistors:
– Ensure proper cooling as excessive heating reduces lifetime
– New XR models can survive practically any bad SWR, but the heat generated by bad SWR can kill them (the silicone chip melts at some point). Copper heat-spreaders are recommended!
– The gate can be quite sensitive to over-drive so make sure to always watch for drive level. A feedback checking output versus input power is also always recommended.
Recommended purchase: Special tool for de-soldering RF transistors?
This is a soldering iron with special de-soldering head, designed to simplify replacement of RF final transistors. It works by heating all four tabs at the same time making the whole process much easier and not destroying the board in the process. Simple, but invaluable tool. Warning: Operates from 220V, EU plug (Power: 80W).
Time to de-solder transistor: 10 seconds (after 1-2minute warm-uptime )
