Hi, I am contemplating the setup of a low power station.. I've seen one or two people talking about putting the antenna in the attic.. first.. does this mean inside literally? second.. is it a bad idea to use a (healthy!) tree for an antenna tower?

thanks

A pair of phased quarter wave verticals works very well..such an array has is small in height and has the capability to allow you to steer your pattern...directional in other words

Greetz,

When any micropower tx,is operated inside of a building it is a foregone
conclusion that the range of the transmission will be significantly reduced
outside of the building, due to the different mediums that the signal has to
traverse...steel..concrete..brick..wood..blah..blah..Attenuation is the end
product.

To achive maximum legal coverage the Tx should be outside...am i right or am
wrong??? So let's move on to the next analogy..So we all agree on that
aspect,so the next obvious solution would be to use some form of external
aerial, which is then connected to the inside positioned TX. via coax. Now where
are we at now?

They have just forced you to break the first regulation...If you are desirous
of being LPFM compliant, then the FCC regualations state that,no modifications
be to the original antenna supplied with the LPFM compliant PLL...So if you
modify the unit, that is ILLEGAL per their rules and regulations.

So here we go again...caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.
Me thinks that which ever way you view the scenario, you are forced to bend the
rules..no choice in the matter..whomever drafted those rules were born in the
medevial age of thinking.

So to you all spanking hardware gurus out there why not consider these wacked
observations of mine.

Why not think along the lines of a PLL that can be self contained in a "Box"
with antenna(s) mounted ass end...or to be politically correct....a aerial that
has not been modified in anyway shape or form...it has remained intact as the
day it was shipped from the supplier...are you getting my drift or what??you
gots to stay with the main flow...Hi ya!

Now lets get a bit more wacked,in addition to the usual audio feed, include in
your design a method of interface control via a RJ-45 network cable, that
carries audio, and handshake commands from a CPU unit, dedicated to that function
or from a regular PC. under specific software control.....you hanging with me
so far or what???.

The audio feed can be of the Rev. Tripp.Ram or audio pumped down a fiber cable
or telephone dedicated pair...You name it..you can slap the rules to your
favour.

Then you grid a square of your 'hood and literally plaster your targeted
audience with a bunch of multiple FCC certified, micropower transmitters, all on
the same frequency, all mounted outside and all in a co-operative cell
structure..Your listeners will not be able to notice the 'Handoff" between
cells due to the capture effect of the RX.

So another way of Bitch slapping..not from a distance useing clean, brute force
and ignorace power, but from the conglomerate of the power within a
cell...unity in numbers....So me thinks

And from a speculative point of view i would say that the PCI series of designs would offer a tremendous advantage to the concept of a "Cell Structure" simulcast..I personally have been involved in major commercial designs useing this concept, and we can port over,a few of the technical design principles to LPFM.

Being able to use the internet as a streaming media source we than then have a common programming source which is then linked to all the individual TX'S in the cell, wherby the tx are so geographically positioned within the targeted coverage area,to provide hand-off coverage, hence full sector coverage, useing low power, which significantly reduces the problems that can arise from high power, and especially if the LPFM operator happens to be somewhat technically challenged for whatever reason.

One of the biggest drawbacks from low power use is that the "opposition" or ill-intentioned rivals can override or blank out a particular cell(s) with high power.

But the security issues are still a very big issue with me as far as i am concerned.
