How can I AMP a store bought FM transmitter

Post by Marc »

I just want it to transmit 2 miles or so. What is the easiest way( meaning what can I buy already built) to boost a signal from a store bought GE short range FM transmitter w/ audio inputs. I live in an apartment, so I have to keep it all indoors.

If not 2 miles, then even a half mile will do.

Thanks for your response.

Those transmitters were made to be yardcasters, meaning they
generate too many harmonics and spurs (spurious signals) close
to the carrier generated by a crappy stereo encoder that these
units usually have.

In short, amplifying those transmitters could get you in trouble
for interference to other services.

What kind of services will be interupted? Just FM or more?

Still, how can I do it?

I'm moving soon so I would like to take the chance. I would like to be able to hear what I broadcast on my car stereo for just a few times, maybe just two or three fridays in my area. If I get interested, I will look into a more detailed approach.

I remember a pirate station in Reno, NV on FM that played a Lead Into scrap metal song, and for the short time I was there it helped make my experience memorable.

Trust the advice here! First, you will most likely hear your station on several spots on the FM dial. Mostly distorted. Not good. Now this should tell you that you will be radiating below FM radio into the TV bands, and above FM radio in the cable TV and aircraft frequencies. Trust me, within a day, you will be the mosted hated person in Reno. The Feds, local cops, and your former friends and teachers, will be hunting you and your family. You will not be able to sleep. :x
