Looking for some deep RDS info.

Post by Yagi »

Maybe some off the RDS experts from PCS can help me on this one... :D

I'm making a RDS decoder to go with my communications receiver and this decoder is intend for 'amateur use' so it can display more information on a LCD then a regular RDS decoder. (like used groups, PI, blok error counter etc. etc.)

For example, it's nice to see that my RDS4000+ has RT/ECC/CLOCK/EON groups :D
Instead of just PS and RT blocks and all blocks are filled nicely confirm the RDS standard.

But one! bit (yes just one bit) is puzzling me a bit
In block2 (some call it blockB) bits 0,1,2 hold the information for the place (DI segment) where the next two PS characters are placed on the display.
This is and can be done with the value of just bit0 and bit1 but where is bit 2 for?

When i look to my RDS4000+ it looks like it randomly becomes a 1, but there is also a station where it always stays 0...
On another station it's only 1 on position 4 of the display...

My idea/thought is that this bit is a CLEAR THE SCREEN bit.

I have read tons of papers on the RDS standard, but can't find any information of this bit, maybe some of the RDS experts from PCS can tell me if my idea is correct.
I spend to many hours in watching to this bit  to see what is does.

Best wishes for 2008 and sorry for the theoretical story.

Greetings Yagi

Its fun, isn't it?

I had to digest the whole standard from zero.

Oh yes it's real fun :D for my decoder i have to study all about these RDS groups...
Especially those ODA groups are fun...

Sometimes it's a bummer, i have only ONE! station who transmits PTYN so after finishing my code to put this 10A group on my display, i discovered that they only transmit 8 spaces :(

Also i have stations (most of them local) who transmit a ECC code of 00 instead of hex E0...E3

It's fun to see all this 'unknown' data that is transmitted via RDS :D

Playing so much with RDS i wondered, is there a possibility to fill the EON information from my RDS4000+?
And is there some sort of list with all the commands i can send to my RDS4000+
