PCImax 2007+ and Vista

Post by Wumbel »

Hi

I got my card today and on my System (Vista) the driver does not work.
It shows this PCI-Error and the access-violation.
Furthermore there seems to be a problem with the install-procedure, because
the driver does not install properly, the INF-file could not be found while installing.
However, I tried the old 2004-driver and it worked with minimal output-power.
A range of some meters.
Well, will there be a better driver for vista in the near future?
I don't see how to get this thing to work. The card identifies as network-controller
in windows. After installing the newest driver I had to manually install the driver via
hardware-manager. But still the same errors.

If you're getting some range from 2004 version it is worth trying with external mains power supply,
it will probably give you full range.

The thing is that these cards throttle down power when used without external power supply and sometimes
this throttle-down is too deep.

I plan to work on the driver today, hope to have some good news for you guys soon.

Driver updated

Post by pcs »

I've updated the driver just now to address the error message that you saw regarding the two inf files.
You can give it a try again. If it still poses a problem let me know and I'll work more on it.

Got it to work

Post by Wumbel »

Hi

I got the card to work properly.
I used this description for it:

http://docs.google.com/View?docid=d2frfsz_13gqnmkh

This seems to do the job. The card runs fine.
Well, the range is not so far. Ok, i use this small antenna.
How far is it supposed to be with 1 W?

There was an error message with some installations. That has been fixed with
the last driver update earlier today. I'm just testing it on a blank XP pc to see if
there are any other issues, can't see any yet.

RANGE:
If you use a big antenna, even the cheapest among listed below, you will easily
see up to 10x more range compared to the small inefficient antenna which is
included free of charge.

http://www.pcs-electronics.com/pcs0210- ... -1103.html
39 euro and this is not a bad antenna at all. Looks funky, but is much better
than the magnetic base type for example as far as range is concerned.

This one due to considerable gain could even give 5-10Km of range at 1W:
http://www.pcs-electronics.com/pcs0205-p-321.html

You have Comet, on special right now:
http://www.pcs-electronics.com/comet-wave-p-319.html

or this one is very cheap, too, and handles up to 500W (future proof),
http://www.pcs-electronics.com/66108-50 ... p-914.html

although personally I prefer the 1000W GP model as it is easier to handle since
it is wideband and requires no tuning:
http://www.pcs-electronics.com/87108-1000w-p-916.html

As you see a very modest investment can really change things as far as range
is concerned. All these antennas are in stock and can ship immediately.

By the way, 15W booster is on a special as well. Looks like Santa has been
good to Radio entusiasts this year.

We made a special effort to stock-up on everything for this holiday season and we
have good stock of everything except the boxed cyber max series, which does take
a while to assemble and ship.

Its ok :-)

Hi again

I changed the position of my antenna and now it gives me a good range.
I can feed the whole house and much more :-).

This should be enough for the moment.
However this pcs0210 is interesting. :-)

This is really a great product. Very good quality of sound.

Ok, let me repeat the procedure here as done in another thread:

Download latest driver here or from our Support/download page, the one on
the CD is not latest:
http://www.pcs-electronics.com/software ... sta_en.zip

We updated the driver to eliminate the two error messages related
to inf files that some users reported.

I've done quite a bit of testing and this should work:

0.) Uninstall previous pci max driver versions
1.) Unzip this file into a folder of choice
2.) Run setup and let it complete
3.) Shut down the PC and install pci max card
4.) Go into the directory where you installed the program and run install.bat (just click it) and let it
complete to make sure inf files really get registered. A popup window could appear, just confirm or continue.
5.) PCI MAX should work now (but might require another reboot, usually not though).

I think we've taken care of the driver issues now and can concentrate on the really cool upcoming stuff, such as the
TV version of PCI MAX coming in January

Than it had to be screwed to begin with. It doesn't do anything weird
with the registry. Sorry.

There is however one other thing to consider:

When you install the program it makes a copy of all updated files, this is for your
own good so you can restore the machine to original state.

When you uninstall the program it asks you whether you want to restore all these
files that the machine created copies of. Generally you should say no, some
other programs that you installed in the mean time could also be using new versions
of the files.

This is how most installation programs work. You should have an option to restore
the files and you have one, however keep in mind that other programs might be using
those updated files and won't work with old files.

So, generally if you don't know what you're doing, don't restore all files when you uninstall.
This goes for just about any program out there, not just this driver.

If I may offer some suggestions on restoring windows, reboot and hold F8 to get
into boot menu, than boot into safe mode or restore to previous working version.

the tricky part

Post by Wumbel »

Hi again

The new driver is ok, but there is one thing that needs to be mentioned.
The windrv6.xxx can't be found during installation.
So here is the way it will work:

1.) install the card

2.) boot the PC (If it asks to search for the driver click on later)

3.) make a folder in program files called "Pci Max 2007+" (without the quotes) (it is "Programme" in Germany)

4.) unzip the install-file into this folder

5.) run the exe-file

6.) after the process reboot

You are ready to go.

The latest install (zip file) should fix this, have you used the last install or the previous one?

Hi

Post by Wumbel »

Hi

I used the file of the 23rd of november.
I wanted to reinstall the driver.
This windrv6 could not be found during install.
The other inf-files were ok.

Well, it should be no problem to make a folder and run it from there.
