Yep, those were fun times. I must have built atleast 10 of the old Heathkits and they all worked. (Most of them before I was sixteen and discovered girls)

Had two wives and two divorces over 30 years...Was better off with my phono oscillator. Can you imagine having the AM MAX II DSP back then?

Actually, we did a little better than that...

One close friend, age 16 or 17, got a job as a DJ at a 3 or 4 KW AM radio station that covered our city quite nicely. This station, btw, had a "new" uhf TV station associated with it and he went on to be the chief engineer of the TV station. He retired from SW Bell and now works as a station engineer out in Las Vegas, Nv.

After we found out teenagers could become DJs we all fanned out finding jobs all over the place....

Another friend, age 20 or 21, somehow managed to talk his dad into buying a bankrupt FM station for a dollar ( he assumed all the past due bills). He moved and re-licensed that station south of town. I worked there donating my time while in college for as long as I could stand it.

I went on to have my own gig at a couple of stations in OKC. My last radio gig was at a Jazz FM station in OKC where I wound up being the program director and full time technician/ engineer. I did everything but cash the big paychecks... There was no money in radio back then.

These days, as I am nearing retirement, I think I would like to own a station just for the fun of it. (this would be fullfilling my dad's dream) The main thing I would like to do is play the kind of music and programming that I like to listen to.

I was thinking about a LPFM station as it would easily cover my neighborhood.
