The only way to really know is to use swr/power meter.

The setting depends on frequency, supply voltage and bias adjustment
so you can't say accurately from number of squares.

So i must have an SWR meter to know the output?
Is it not another way to do it? Turn down the voltage on the power supply? SWRmeter cost a lot here in norway.

I need 1w to drive the 40 amp.

Start from zero and go up until you get 40W from the amp.

Again you need swr meter to see 40W.

You will need swr/power meter at one time or another,
I say get one, the sooner the better.
