How about using GSM phone?

You could send a tone via FM transmitter and have
PLL detector like LM567 connected to audio output
of your radio.

If you are making something from scratch, the best thing to use is zigbee. Low power, good range. Check out Freescales product offering.

Or, since you're already interested in FM broadcasting why not use RDS. A simple Atmel microcontroller and an RDS decoder IC will cost way less than 10eu and the whole thing can be built on veroboard.

- You will have the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
- You will have integrated your FM broadcasting hobby.
- You will achieve far more range than most RF modules allow for.
- Unlike DTMF and other audio-frequency controls your listeners will be oblivious.

Besides, it's just so much more cool. And, if you don't feel up to programming a PIC microontroller you could use a 'basic stamp'
