What do I need, my setup explained

Post by DoubleOne »

I live on the 15th floor of my building. My apartment faces north with no obstructions in front. I have a 180 degree view over the CBD and the city.

I have a computer, with dsl connection. All this is linked to my Cd Decks and mixer.

I would like to start broadcasting, properley now. I have been part of 2 other radio stations, now its time for my own.

I would like to broadcast about 10KM radius from my apartment.

I believe I need:

1 X PCIMAX2006+ (1W)

1 x antenna

I am unsure what antenna to purchase, and because I am in South Africa shipping may be an issue.

I can get the PCIMax sent to London and then sent to me in the companies overnight mail but a transmitter is different...or is it?

There was a guy who said he used a wire transmitter and all worked well. Is the wire transmitter bulky? or can it be sent in a mail package?

How bulky is the box which the PCIMax comes in?

Budget is important for me, I would like to keep costs to a minimum, hence going for this option which is great!

Your response is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

PCI MAX will not give you 10Km of range. It may hapen in some rare circumstances,
but you are more likely to have perhaps 1Km or range.

If you're low on budget, get this transmitter (model A):
http://www.pcs-electronics.com/test/pro ... cts_id=216

Than buy some coax cable at your local shop, the best you can get for long runs,
or just RG58 for short runs.

Than build your own power supply from our guides section, perhaps you have it already
or you want to use car battery. These are all options.

Build your own antenna from our guides section.

If, however, your budget permits, get this one:
http://www.pcs-electronics.com/test/pro ... cts_id=291

With either of these two you stand a chance of reaching 10Km away or more with
favorable conditions.

so even if I use PCI Max with a large antenna I wont reach 10km?

In other words its all about the transmitter, not the antenna in terms of reach?

Antenna is very important, however 1W is a modest amount of power.

Just like with a car, for example, you can't say the wheels are the most important thing
or the engine is the most important thing.

It all needs to fit together to make the car go. Even the best aerodynamics won't get
you far if you use 1 horsepower engine :)

so if I got a PCI Max and a decent antenna, what would be a good area that will be covered - I dont want to spend too much money and can settle for less area if I need to?
