CRTC says only 100 milliwatts!?

Post by cohiba »

I called the CRTC, Canadian Radio ... Commission, and they said that if you dont have a licence you can only use 100 milliwatts! What kind of distance can you get on 100 milliwatts with the COMET CFM-95SL?

Would 50 feet up be considered a "high tower"? Is there anything else that I can do to increase the signal without going over the 100milliwatts?

50 feet is very good. Also, use a high gain antenna.

About 10 years ago I use to work in WSAN, a full power(50 Kw ) station. In one remote site we have a 1 watt translator with a Comet 5/8 wave antenna installed in "Banco Popular" main building (about 200 feet tall building) with a 20 feet pole. Our coverage was at that moment about 5 to 8 miles ( using my car radio). So using that parameters, with only 100 mW you may cover 2.5 to 3 miles. The most important thing for good propagation in the FM band is a tall antenna rather than power!!!

Just a curious question, what if you are in a high rise building like I am, on the 14th floor and cannot place an antenna outside. what distance will you get from that?

Hmm, that would kill a lot of the signal. Perhaps place it as close to the window.
