OK--forgive this stupid question, but it can be used without having the PC on, right? I'm assuming the USB is just to set frequency and other settings, but once set it's autonomous, right?

You're probably right--tho i'm not clear on how to make the new cards external. I've decided that would actually be easier than the internal card.

Also, what was the power output of the 2004/2005? ...

That's just if you have to upgrade/revert the drivers. I've had other programs that keep the device installed after their own uninstaller. Just an additional step to make sure the drivers that weren ...

I've had to do the same thing, revert to the 2004 drivers. Just remember to manually uninstall the card's drivers from the device manager if you do this.
