If you attempt to use a TV antenna your signal will jump all over the band, your swr will go through the roof and your rig will eventually blow its main output transistor.

I think this depends on which area I wish to cover and where the site is. If the site is outside a city and you wish to cover the city a yagi could be preferable as well as 5/8 can be quite sufficient ...

do you have to tune all antennas when switching frequencies?

Not all antennas need to be tuned to frequency, some are "no tune" these are usually folded dipoles.

I assume you can transpose the output of the tuning test tone to some form of digital power output scale, for example a multimeter? for a more precise reading.

As i understand it there is a 2mhz bandwidth on the Comet,

Hmmm now the error message is still occurring, regardless of audio level input... It does not seem to be effecting output range or stability.
