no red light

I am new here, and am looking for a little guidance.
I got my pcimax2007+ installed and running with the install.bat. Great now I'm off to get an antenna today, but i am wondering if the little red LED on the back should be on even when I don't have an antenna attached????
If so it has never come on, and i'm wondering how to fix that?????
As well as can i get any 50omh antenna to attach to my system it's a 500mw. just sending it around the house and yard.
