AM Mobile Aerial

Post by Tarquin »

Hello everyone,

Just wondering if there is any interest in a mobile aerial for the AM band, well the top part anyway.
I have been experimenting with a comercial amatuer 160m unit and have redesigned the coil. I am using it at present on 1350khz. When I say mobile, I dont actually mean whilst travelling along, more of a parkrd up arrangement.Although with a strong enough magmount, like a triple one it may be possible
By lots of measurements and a bit of trial and error, I have discovered the aerial needs a coil inductance of 860μH for 1350khz and 695μH for 1600khz. The coil is 6inch diameter close wound and the winding is 5.5 inches using 17swg. A quick calculation suggests for 558khz the coil would again be 6inches in diameter but 2ft long. The restrictions on the original amateur aerial suggests max lengh of coil size is 12inches so lowest frequency is around 700khz. At this point the wire gauge is smaller so power considerations would have to be considered. Will upload pictures if there is any interest

I would be very carefull. With a huge antenna of this type driving around can result in causing an accident
and killing people, don't do it!

Just ignore what Marko has to say. After all he has abandoned all the AM people because there isn’t enough profit to be made out of you.
Obviously, if you felt the structure to be unsafe you wouldn’t drive with it up!!!
Having said that people do, take a look at the photo’s. impressive mag mount

People do all kinds of crazy things. A sharp turn and that antenna could fly right into the incoming car possibly killing someone.

Actually we do offer 1000W AM transmitter:
