Digital Data over AM or FM

Hi, I'm trying to build a computer controller car (toy car) for a comunications course in my school. So far my idea is convert the digital data from the Parallel port of the PC to an analogic signal (with a DAC??), transmit that over AM or FM (my teacher told me it's better to use FM because of noise) and then receive the signal, and convert it again to digital form (with an ADC??) and use it to control the car.

The problem is the modulation/demodulation. So far I tried an AM modulator with the LM1496 wich is a balanced modulator/demodulator in wich it's output is the product of both it's inputs. The circuit seems to work fine (its very simple) but it modulates in AM.

I saw here that the tiny fm modulator only using a 7413 would work well with morse code signals, maybe I can use that to simulate 1's or 0's ??

One last thing. In a book I saw a FM demodulator using the 566 PLL that was very simple, I would like to know if there's a FM modulator using the 566 PLL?

Any help on any of my multiple questions are greatly appreciated.
