1/4 wave aerials

I've worked out from the table on this site that you add 5% to the the length of the radials when building these, but why? Other sites with 1/4 wave calculators tell me to use the same length radials as the radiator. I have noticed that 1/4 wave gp calculators shorten the 1/4 wave by about 5%, is this the reason?

To get impedance as close to resistive 50 ohms I suppose.
