Description

SWR/PWR directional couplers with RMS detectors for digital transmitters

This small PCB screws tightly and directly to the heatsink close to the antenna output and the amplifier and enables measuring output power and reflected power.  It contains stripline directional coupler and RMS power/reflected power sensors. RMS power detectors based on AD8361 measure the average signal power of the input signal (RMS) as opposed to the amplitude or peak of the input signal the usual peak-envelope detectors. The DC output voltage of this detector is a representation of that average signal power.  RMS sensors are typically used for digital transmission modes, such as DAB+ digital radio or digital TV. RMS Detectors produce an accurately scaled DC output voltage that changes linearly with the RMS value of the input waveform. These devices are optimized to provide very high accuracy (to within ±0.2dB), temperature independent RMS power measurements for a variety of complex waveform adaptive modulation techniques, such as OFDM, CDMA, QAM thus giving the ability to provide accurate power measurements irrespective of the waveform.

The board has several connection points:
– Output going to the antenna (RF out)
– Input going to the amplifier or filter, if there is one.
– +50V or +5V points for power supply. It is better to use +5V, if you have that voltage easily available in the system. A simple zener diode based solution can provide power directly from 50V but there is some heating involved in the drop resistors so this is not a preferred solution. It does work though.

Coaxial cable can be soldered to the in and out RF terminals. We recommend PTFE based coaxial cable for such interconnection wiring since PTFE isolation does not melt when soldered or heated due to high power level.  The boards themselves are produced on PTFE laminate and take higher power and temperature.

Technical specifications
– Size: 31mm x 58mm, PTFE laminate
– Power handling: Approximately 0-1000W RMS with some airflow and when mount to the heatsink
– Frequency range: 0-800MHz
– Power sensors: RMS
– Includes: PCB and all components, connector and screws not included

Our opinion: Perfect for digital modes such as for DAB+ digital radio and digital TV

Digital breakout board
Connect any filter with directional coupler to DIGIAMP exciter with this breakout board. The DIGIAMP interconnect system enables easy integration into a full transmitter with our exciters and control boards. All it takes is one flat cable (DIGIAMP). This connection enables measurement of SWR and Power, amplifier supply voltage, current and temperature. It also provides SWR protection and automatic output level limiting. A perfect companion for any filters and pallet amplifiers, offering power, temperature, current and reflected power reading. Even without FM exciter it offers some protection as bias voltage is pulled down when some adjusted limit is overdriven (Max current limit, max power limit or reflected power limit!

Breakout board fots into our 800W, 1000-1500W, 2000 and 3000W ampbox.
